Nodame Cantabile Pari Hen
Alex: Sequels are funny, you know. When a sequel is made because the first one was such a hit, it’s hard to get anywhere close to the awesomeness that was the first one. So, where does that leave the sequel to the noitaminA hit, Nodame Cantabile?
To start with, as you should already know by the time you went into this, it’s about a genius named Chiaki, and a scatterbrained girl with talent named Nodame. The first series was about a genius growing into the world of music. This one…is about Nodame and Chiaki’s love life. That doesn’t sound good, does it?
Luckily, the charm from Series 1 is back, abit in slightly smaller lumps, which does break up the painful romantic-comedy antics of Nodame. Yet that right there is what lets this series down. I mean, it focuses much more strongly on the music side of life, the orchestra and classical music is better than before, the animation’s gone up a notch to the point where it’s actually really arty as well as really musical. But godamit, Nodame really lets the season drop. But it’s not just her.
Somewhere in the gap, Chiaki became an asshole, to be blunt. He’s way more rude and insensitive than before, and all that development from S1 disappeared, as he still treats Nodame like an annoying kitten who won’t go away. When you’ve gone from the masterful direction of Series 1 to this…then you’ll see what I mean.
