Review: Natsume Yuujinchou

Natsume’s Book of Friends

Alex: I’d think that it’s really obvious that I like the calm, composed style of series. The ones which are beautifully unique in almost every form, and have something “special” about them. Like some of my other favorites, namely Kino No Tabi and Mushishi, this is an episodic series.

Every episode has a unique feature on youkai. Some of them want their name back from the book of friends, some of them want a favor, and some of them he just bumps into randomly on his day to day life. Whilst it may seem boring, each and every episode is so wonderfully thought out and planned, that the deep message hidden inside every episode always hits you. It always manages to hit you, and it always hits you hard. I shed a tear at the episode with the Fox-cub, for example.I love a series which has a message and a belief to convey to you, and I love it even more when it manages this in a subtle yet powerful manner.

Natsume Yuujinchou is a not so average view on the daily life of someone who can see youkai. Natsume, a quiet boy with a troubled childhood due to seeing “strange” things is obviously the lead character, and he’s accompanied with the brilliant Nyanko-Sensei, a fat, round cat with an attitude who never makes it clear if he likes Natsume or not, the whole series is a fantastic character study.Every single youkai has a unique and interesting personality, and they can make the show come to life. There’s the one which is either cute or annoying, the adorable one you just wanna squeeze, and the silent one which doesn’t like talking.

Heck, even the artwork is beautiful. It may seem rather simple, but it couldn’t be more perfect for this anime. In fact, the simplicity of it is what makes it truly stunning for me. With simple, yet memorable and adorable character designs dotted throughout, the only way to accompany this would be to have an equally brilliant soundtrack. And guess what? It has that. I’d go as far as to say that it has everything. Bring on Season 2~ Easily a strong recommendation, and easily one of my favorites~ Mimi’s just lame because she didn’t add it to her favorites.

Mimi: And Alex is lame for removing Monster from his favorites. :3 Anyway, excellent anime~ I quite enjoyed watching this one with Alex.

Alex’s Score: 10 Meeps out of 10 (Masterpiece)

Mimi’s Score: 9 Meeps out of 10 (Great)
