Answer: Battle of Trost District, Part 6
Icon: Battle of Trost District, Part 7
Wound: Battle of Trost District, Part 8
Primal Desires: Battle of Trost District, Part 9
What an ending to the first arc! But the series I fear is suffering from some serious pacing problems. The three minute recap of the last two episodes is a testament to that. Also, Doofus will actually take this over next week.
First, I want to comment on my enjoyment of the episodes. I’m still enjoying each one a lot. But for anyone watching it’s obvious the last few episodes have been lacking in comparison to the first 7 or so. Each episode suffers some from laugh out loud QUALITY at some moments, and the use of too many stills – often times entire conversations taking place during them.
Perhaps it was an artistic decision to use the stills in some cases, but I’m not buying it. A few days ago I was watching The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya with others from the blog, and Doofus continually pointed out the great use of silence during certain scenes – which in turn made the actiony/emotional scenes far more hard-hitting. The same should be applied to the effective use of stills; as in, the use of them should be used in conjunction with further scenes to enhance them. None of that was used here – the stills only existed to eat up screen time.
I’m unsure if the pacing issues have to do with the constant use of quality, but especially in these last few episodes, I’ve never seen so much uncompleted animation in anime. I mean… Seriously? Some of the terrain was purple in the last episode. Just unacceptable for that to go through even if it will be fixed on the DVD’s.
As far as the actual plot goes, it is adapting things rather accurately even with all the stills and added dialogue. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the same introspective/realization scenes in this series. It’s getting pretty old at this point. Armin’s speech which was one of the highlights in the manga, was pretty badly messed up. They tried to make it “epic” but only ended up making it ridiculously melo dramatic.
Episodes 10-12 could have easily been one or maybe two episodes. Other than the last episode, I really think the quality of the series was suffering. This is afterall an action shounen, but at times it seems like Bleach with all the talking, staring, introspective realizations etc…
Regardless, the last episode was great. Seeing humanity finally triumph over the titans was a sight to behold. All of my favourite characters got some screen time this episode, so that’s always good. The only thing I’m bummed out about is that the next episode will be a recap.
