Sakamichi no Apollon Episode 4

But not for me

Sakamichi no Apollon does it again… For once in anime, the drama doesn’t feel forced, dragged out, or over the top. It’s just right! I mean, it’s completely understandable why Kaoru would feel jealous over Sentarou’s family and close friendship with Ritsuko. It appears that Sentarou has everything that he doesn’t, but not quite… Sentarou goes on to explain his not-so-perfect childhood to be able to relate to him on “not belonging” at home, which even makes Kaoru cry. What a beautiful scene. *sniffle* I like how the interpersonal drama builds up over a few episodes mostly based on Kaoru’s observations, gets triggered by something (in this case by Ritsuko’s reaction), and then quickly gets resolved over simple communication. Well done~

Y’know, Kaoru still surprises me sometimes. He bravely kisses Ritsuko when he finds the opportunity, and we’re only four episodes in… Bravo again, sir! Though I have to say, the anime also has its way of making Kaoru and Sentarou look like an odd couple, starting with their very first encounter… xD

Finally, they get to play their first gig at a bar. While it doesn’t go completely as planned due to that drunk soldier interrupting them, Kaoru and the trumpet guy manage to improvise quite well. Some interesting new development–pretty girl likes trumpet guy. Yeah, I’d probably pick him too. He’s handsome and has a nice singing voice. *swoons* xD Anyway, awesome performance!

I have a bad feeling that Kaoru’s family is going to interfere with his enjoyment for jazz eventually. I gather that his mom doesn’t know what he’s been up to yet, and his dad could be a different person when he returns home or something. We’ll see. :O
